With so much music out there it’s sometimes hard to find these really good bands to connect with. Not to worry, I’ve done all the “hard work” of listening through tons of different bands. Every so often I’ll present you with 5 bands that you should be listening to. These bands aren’t necessarily the most popular, but they definitely are some of the most talented. With that being said, here is my list for the month of February 2013:

As many of you may know, I have a strong connection with the city of Las Vegas. My favorite band, The Killers, hail from the city of neon lights. I’ve had some incredible times in the desert, and met some amazing people there. When I first discovered ‘Almost Normal’, the first thing I read was that they hail from Las Vegas. This got me excited! Bands such as the aforementioned The Killers, also Imagine Dragons and Most Thieves came to mind. Simply stated, Almost Normal needed to live up to the bar that’s been set by these incredible bands.

Almost Normal is made up of Ashley Lampman on the vocals, Shane Ouellette lead guitarist, Andrew Zakher drums, keyboards, and piano, and last but not least, Cris Hanna on the bass guitar. Upon listening to their EP “I Shot The Moon” the first thing that struck me was their similarities to bands such as Shiny Toy Guns and Paramore. When I listen to the song “Write Me A Letter”, it brings me back to my high school days, reminiscing to the stupid (but fun) decisions I used to make; it’s definitely my favorite from them.

“ALMOST NORMAL, “I Shot the Moon” (almostnormalmusic.com): Ashley Lampman is the kind of lady who spells her emotions out in all caps. “My heart beats for you,” she sings on album opener “Escape.” “Tasting you is just like heaven,” she adds on “Make Believe.” “I really, really love you,” she summates on closer “Breakup Season.” Lampman’s ardor is an unmovable object on “I Shot the Moon,” as outsize as that which is targeted in its title. You hear it in her voice, as she sings in a breathy, ever-earnest rush of words freighted with longing. Lampman humanizes Almost Normal’s alternately eager and bittersweet pop rock, which is equally polished and precocious. “Let’s be kids forever,” she implores over ringing guitars on “Write Me A Letter,” and true to form, this disc does have a starry-eyed feel to it. Some will find it all a bit too precious, but the band, rounded out by guitarist Shane Ouellette, drummer Andrew Zakher and bassist Cris Hanna, is as cutting as they are occasion”

This band is starting to gain some popularity, especially after their Saturday Night Live appearance in 2012. A lot of my (Miami) friends have never heard of them though, go figure! Sleigh Bells is an American noise pop musical duo from Brooklyn, New York City, formed in 2008. The duo consists of Derek Edward Miller on guitar and Alexis Krauss on vocals. They currently have two albums released, ‘Treats (2010), and ‘Reign of Terror’ (2012).

“When so much music seems designed to evoke the mood and vibe of a specific era, either through direct imitation or playing with the memories of the music’s context, Sleigh Bells deftly avoid any single pigeonhole. There are references, but it never feels like the music is merely pointing. Genre here is something to be twisted around and pulled and braided with something else, a mangled container struggling to hold the energy and ecstasy of the music. They gather up bits from all over and use them to create music that puts you squarely in the present moment.” – Pitchfork

Do you sense a theme here? Yup, you guessed it; female lead singers! The Joy Formidable is an alternative rock band formed in 2007 in North Wales and currently located in London, England. The band consists of Ritzy Bryan (lead vocals, guitar), Rhydian Dafydd (bass, backing vocals), and Matt Thomas (drums, percussion). Currently, they have two studio albums, ‘The Big Roar’ (2011), and ‘Wolf’s Law’ (2013).

“Ask a handful of your friends what they think of The Joy Formidable, and there’s a good chance at least one of them will respond with a glisten in their eyes, recounting the time they just happened to come across the Welsh trio’s debut album “The Big Roar” from 2011 and fell head over heels in love with the dramatics of it all. Or the time they stumbled upon their set at a festival–caught them as the opening act for Foo Fighters’ epic surprise Lollapalooza pre-show at Metro, perhaps?–exclaimed “Who ARE these guys?!” and indoctrinated themselves into the overnight fanboy club for the young band.” – RedEyeChicago.com
